Abstract: | Climate change is a phenomenon that has continually drawn global attention. Developing nations appear to be the worst hit by the effects of its menace. Despite being saddled with developmental responsibility, the media in Nigeria have been accused of not doing enough by way of reportage of the hazards and threat posed by climate change. It is in the light of this, that this study investigated the media coverage of climate change issues by Nigerian newspapers. The study was anchored on Development Media Theory and Agenda Setting Theory. Content analysis method was applied and a sample size of 80 editions of the Vanguard and the Nation newspapers were purposively drawn from a total population of 730 editions of the Vanguard and the Nation newspapers from January 1 to December 31, 2023. The study found that both newspapers grossly under-reported and gave insignificant reference to climate change issues in the country. It therefore recommended that issues related to climate change be given adequate media coverage and the media should continue to set agenda for the people, informing them about issues of development and societal importance that will generally improve their wellbeing as well as create public awareness about the hazard of climate change and suggest more adaptive measures. |
